Dexter: Designed for one listener
You already know what you’re listening for. The detail in the upper frequencies that lesser tweeters smear. The bass that doesn’t just go deep but arrives with weight and timing intact. The midrange where voices and instruments either sound real or they don’t. These are not technical preferences. They are the standards of someone who has spent serious time with music and can no longer accept less.
Leif Olofsson designs to the same standards. Not to a brief, not to a price point, not to what the market is asking for — to what he himself finds acceptable. When he can’t resolve something, he keeps working. The bass system in Dexter had been forming in his thinking for five years before the series existed. Not as a feature to be added — as an unresolved problem he kept returning to. What came back from early listening sessions surprised him. The depth was expected. The dynamics were not. They changed the direction of the final tuning entirely. Most speakers aren’t built that way, but Dexter was.
The drivers follow the same logic. Increasingly, a Marten driver is not chosen from what exists but developed in direct collaboration with the manufacturer — Leif bringing the acoustic requirements, the manufacturer bringing the material knowledge, the process ending somewhere neither could have reached alone. The tweeter in Dexter began with ideas from the Coltrane Supreme Extreme project and went further. The dedicated midrange in Dexter Quartet and Dexter Quintet — convex, highly rigid, made from a proprietary material — is a driver that exists nowhere else. Leif didn’t know how much it would open up the performance of those two models until he heard it finished. That is not a development process with a fixed destination. It’s something closer to a practice.
The details that don’t show up in specification sheets follow the same instinct. The Marten Isolator fitted to every Dexter model, with its adjustable height ring, was previously reserved for Coltrane Supreme Extreme. The carbon fibre laminate faceplate is shared with the flagship models. They are the decisions of someone who couldn’t justify doing it any other way.
There are four finishes available on Dexter, each developed for this series. True Grain Oak is new to Marten and exclusive to this range — the grain left open, the surface tactile, honest about what it is. The two walnut finishes were selected for their depth of grain and natural, restrained tone — surfaces that sit quietly in a room rather than competing with it. Piano Black does something different: it makes the cabinet disappear. What remains is the geometry and the drivers. All four were chosen because they were right for these speakers.
